Psychological Assessment of a Sample of Egyptian Children and Adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Abstract Background Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is the most common type of diabetes in children. Besides damaging effects on various organs, cognitive changes are also very common. Changes memory, executive function, attention and academic performance among important impairments seen children with diabetes. Objectives The aim this work to do psychological assessment adolescents at Ain Shams University paediatrics hospital including Health Related Quality life DSM-5 criteria for diagnosing ADHD. Patients methods This study cross sectional case-control included 140 cases divided into two groups group (A) includes seventy diabetic recruited from Paediatric Clinic, paediatric hospital, 35 males (50%) females(50%) age ranges 6 14 years old Mean±SD (9.56±2.25), (B) normal 32 males(45.7%) 38 females(54.3%) 5 15.5 (10.32 ± 2.93). Both were subjected full history taking, clinical examination Anthropometric measures i.e. weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), laboratory investigations HbA1C, CBC, Metabolic Profile, psychometric deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Conners rating scale, health related quality ( HRQL) questionnaire, Pediatric Check List (PCL). Results Cases fulfilling ADHD (predominantly hyperactive type, predominantly inattentive mixed type) more than control difference was statistically significant, HRQOL shows lower score those highly significant. Conclusion has an impact psychosocial development as they grow up.
